Just as relevant today...

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

In the summer of 1968, with the Civil Rights movement in full swing, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on a hotel balcony in Memphis on April 4th. A few months later, on June 6th, Bobby Kennedy was shot and killed in Los Angeles. 1968 was also the same year Elvis Presley recorded a television special that would later be referred to as his 1968 Comeback Special. The Special included many of Elvis's greatest hits mixed in with a number of new songs. To close out the show, Elvis wanted a song that reflected his fondness for Martin Luther King Jr. and the devastation he felt about his assassination. To accommodate his desire to perform a "message song," If I Can Dream was written. Elvis's performance of the song was truly emotionally remarkable, the lyrics as relevant today as they were in 1968. Enjoy!
